My passion for small-scale, top-quality productions led me to the hills overlooking the western Ligurian Sea in the province of Imperia, where I gladly accepted the invitation of Antonio, a passionate winemaker who tends his small vineyard with love—though it would be more fitting to call it a "delightful garden." Walking among the rows, I listened to his stories, precious testimonies of a way of practising viticulture that few people know. All his effort stems from the utmost respect for the soil and for the precious work of Mother Nature, of man, of the vine and of its offshoots, the shoots! Antonio is a true "guardian" of the cultivation and single-variety vinification of an extremely rare grape variety, once well known and appreciated at the courts of kings and popes: Moscatello di Taggia, Riviera di Ponente Ligure DOC. It is a white-berried grape variety belonging to the Moscato Bianco family, whose origins are traced back to the Middle Ages. It nearly went extinct due to a vine pest, phylloxera, which caused turmoil across Europe in the late 19th century, leading to the almost total destruction of vineyards. Fortunately, a small group of winegrowers managed to save a few vines, which, once replanted, allowed this grape variety to survive to this day. Antonio has managed to elevate it to excellence! The meticulous care devoted to the vineyard, the attention paid to selecting the finest bunches, caressed one by one, and the expertise in vinification carried out in the small cellar give us three different interpretations of this precious nectar: the fragrant dry white, the complex dry white aged in French oak barriques, and the alluring passito. These three rare gems, produced in extremely limited quantities, are highly sought after by true connoisseurs, who in a glass of this precious nectar rediscover the true expression of a terroir and a truly unique way of practising viticulture.
