In the early twentieth century, in the rural villages of the Adige valley, where there were not yet shops or trattorias, when the wine was ready and the winegrower was in a welcoming mood, a sprig of ivy was hung on the cellar door. That was the signal to which the neighbours would respond with a glass, a bottle and a chair. In the courtyard, an informal wine-tasting gathering would then be organised, in a spirit of conviviality. This is how Giuseppina and Paolo's great-grandfather used to sell his wine in Volano, a small village near Trento. Today, the two young winegrowers, drawing on the treasure of experience handed down to them, with fresh enthusiasm and excellent modern technology, have managed to produce both white and red wines that express that wonderful land — clayey because it was once flooded by the Adige river — lying between the hills of Trento and the northern shores of Lake Garda. In 1969 they began bottling their wines, and in 1980 the name became Maso Salengo. Yesterday as today, the family is proud to produce a soft, well-structured Marzemino, thanks precisely to the clayey nature of the soil. In the vineyard, the Marzemino vines are trained on pergolas, in some areas with old vines — which is hardly surprising, since here in Vallagarina this grape variety is a true star, celebrated and mentioned by the librettist Da Ponte in the verses of Don Giovanni set to music by Mozart: "Pour the wine! Excellent Marzemino!". The winery produces around ten grape varieties, selected among those best suited to its land, and makes a few white wines, but mainly red wines.
