Guido Bernardi is a man of few words. Few, because no more are needed. He doesn't need to convince anyone, whether about his own image, his company's, or through big marketing campaigns. He produces wine, and in particular mostly Prosecco; he's always done it, and he does it very well. He is a fifth-generation winegrower. The Bernardi family estate covers 16 hectares, 13 of which are planted with vineyards in Ogliano, a small village of 1,000 souls located in the hills 4 km north of Conegliano. Here, the cultivation of the vine and the production of wine are lost in the mists of time: Conegliano is in fact a city of art and home to Italy's oldest school of oenology, as well as to the degree course in Viticultural and Oenological Sciences and Technologies of the University of Padua. Every time I go to visit Guido and drive the road from Valdobbiadene towards Conegliano, I'm captivated by the gentle harmony of the landscape, amid the green hills of this corner of the Veneto in the province of Treviso, where the partnership between man and nature has created a unique cultural landscape, which has not by chance recently become a UNESCO World Heritage site. The life of the Bernardi family revolves entirely around wine production. The grape harvest and selection are all done strictly by hand, and Mr. Guido always has plenty to do on the estate, among the vineyard rows or in the cellar. He has no time to talk—he has to think, to our great delight, about the next Prosecco.
