Product sheet: Sicilian Oregano

The genus Origanum derives from the Greek "oros", mountain, and "ganos", splendour, meaning joy of the mountain, probably due to the fragrance that emanates from the places where the plant grows. It is a herbaceous species with lovely white flowers gathered in clusters, characterised by a very intense scent. It grows in uncultivated areas, in woods and on embankments. Its flowering tops are used. It has been used since ancient times, a typical aroma of Mediterranean cuisine. A must for flavouring pizza. Versatile with a great many dishes, both fish and meat. Excellent on focaccia, sauces and soups. Used for the extraction of its essential oils, rich in terpinene, thymol and carvacrol, oregano has been known since ancient times for its beneficial effects on human health; numerous medicinal properties are in fact attributed to it, including: analgesic, digestive, carminative, diuretic, tonic, antiseptic, expectorant, antispasmodic and anti-inflammatory properties.
