Chilli pepper belongs to the genus Capsicum, a term originating from the Latin capsula, diminutive of capsa, referring to the shape of the fruit which resembles a box containing the seeds. It may also derive from the Greek kapto, meaning to bite, referring to the spicy taste that âbitesâ the tongue when tasted. The fruits have their characteristic spicy flavour due to the presence of capsaicin. The flowers are white and flowering occurs between late spring and summer. The fruits vary in shape and colour depending on the different cultivars, as well as in spiciness. For its habitat, it requires good light exposure and well-drained soil. The fruits, harvested in summer, are the part used.
